TANDEM: A PHOTOGRAPHY OF TWO
The most stimulating and exciting things happen around us every day in everyday life. «Tandem: A photography of two» is just that: light, colour, and shape framed candidly, without staging.
For Alexey Poptsov, the author of this series, the most important thing in photography is the presence of light. As Léonard Misonne said, “Light glorifies everything. It transforms and ennobles the most commonplace and ordinary subjects. The object is nothing; light is everything.” Hence, when there is cloudy weather, Poptsov always carries around a flash. Every day is a new invitation to challenge the author’s perspective and find juxtapositions in urban life.
«Tandem: A photography of two» aims to explore every corner of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Despite this, we find ourselves in front of a universal metropolis, lurking its dwellers on its streets to set the play in motion.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Aleksey Poptsov is a 36-year-old Kazakhstanis photographer based in the city of Almaty, Kazakhstan. He works as a sound engineer, and he takes photographs on the streets of his town in his leisure time for six years now.
Poptsov started doing street after a long journey in landscape photography since he can find mountains and green panoramas near his hometown. Eventually, landscapes became less charming, to the point where he abandoned this genre to focus on something more complex and layered. He accidentally stumbled upon street photography and realised that it was his format: since then, street has been his way of life. When he goes out, a camera is always within his hand’s reach. He analyses everything happening in his surroundings wherever he goes, from the market to a walk in the park. As he puts it, photography is his favourite game, and he is ready to play it for a long time.
