“From the Streets to the Dirt”

The compelling photo series, “From the Streets to the Dirt,” by Dan Fenstermacher chronicles the remarkable and transformative journey of Kwesi and Kurt as they transition from lives entrenched in adversity to embraced the care of six horses, twelve chickens, four goats, and three dogs, all while tending to their families.

Drawn to the cowboy lifestyle, they faced considerable adversity, encountering racism within the ranching industry and in their personal lives.

Despite these challenges, several individuals from Richmond, California, including police officers, ex-gang members, and former prison inmates, united in their purpose to build a ranch from scratch in Benicia, CA. Together, they found solace and a new direction in life by mentoring local youth through summer camps and exposing them to opportunities beyond the crime-ridden neighborhoods they once knew.
