From the thousands of submitted works, the expert jury selected 55 photographers as winners, jurors’ picks, and finalists of the competition. These artists stood out for their ability to tell visual stories, their creativity, and their unique style in expressing contemporary reality through street and documentary photography.

Eyeshot Open Call 2023: A Showcase at Magazzini Fotografici, Naples

This year, we are thrilled to announce that the Magazzini Fotografici in Naples will serve as the distinguished venue for the Eyeshot Open Call 2023 exhibition. Known for its commitment to photographic art and its avant-garde approach to showcasing contemporary works, Magazzini Fotografici offers an exciting platform for our curated selection of photographers.

Situated in the heart of Naples, Magazzini Fotografici not only draws a passionate local audience but also garners international attention, aligning perfectly with Eyeshot’s global vision. The venue’s reputation for presenting ground-breaking visual narratives adds an extra layer of prominence to this year’s event.

Marco Savarese, the founder and editor-in-chief of Eyeshot, is the curator of the exhibition. His expertise and vision will undoubtedly contribute to elevating the showcase, ensuring that it reflects both the aesthetic and conceptual vision Eyeshot is known for.

The Magazzini Fotografici sets the stage for a truly extraordinary showcase of Eyeshot’s Open Call 2023, amplifying the quality of the presented works and adding a touch of Neapolitan flair to this prestigious gathering of the photography community.

The Jury

The Internationally Renowned Jury

The Eyeshot Open Call 2023 jury assembles a stellar lineup of esteemed professionals. The panel is led by Marco Savarese, Eyeshot’s founder and editor-in-chief, and includes Magnum photographers Trent Parke and Emin Özmen, as well as recognized figures in street and documentary photography like Koci Hernandez, Mark Abramson, and Isadora Kosofsky. Completing the roster are World Press Photo Award winners Narelle Autio and Kitra Cahana, F. Dilek Yurdakul, an award-winning street photographer and lawyer, and Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, a seasoned documentary and portrait photographer. Together, their diverse experiences and distinct viewpoints have helped to select the most compelling and artistically significant works for this year’s competition.

Trent Parke

Trent Parke is the first Australian to become a Full Member of Magnum Photos. His work has been exhibited widely and is held in major institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Magnum London, and Magnum Paris.

Kitra Cahana

Kitra Cahana is a documentary photographer, videographer, and a TED speaker. She is a contributing photographer to National Geographic. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including two Canada Council Grants, TED Senior Fellowship, a 2015 Pulitzer Center for Investigative Reporting grant, and first prize for the 2010 World Press Photo.

Isadora Kosofsky

Isadora Kosofsky is a documentary photographer, writer, and filmmaker based in Los Angeles and Albuquerque. She is a National Geographic Photographer and has contributed to the NY Times, TIME, The New Yorker, Le Monde, and many others.

Mark Abramson

Mark Abramson is a photographer based between Los Angeles and New York City, and a frequent contributor to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and more.

Marco Savarese

Marco Savarese is the founder and editor-in-chief of Eyeshot since 2017. Thanks to his many years of experience in the evaluation and management of emerging and internationally renowned artists, he makes it his daily activity to enhance photographers and their work.

Narelle Autio

Narelle Autio is a multi award-winning photographer whose artistic career spans over 30 years. In 2002 she became the first Australian to have won the venerable international Leica Oskar Barnack Award. She has also won two Walkley Awards for journalism, and two first-prize World Press Photo awards.

Laylah Amatullah Barrayn

Laylah Amatullah Barrayn is an award-winning documentary and portrait photographer, writer, and curator in New York City. She is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, where her photography work on a 2019 story was nominated for a News & Documentary Emmy. She has also been published in Vogue, National Geographic, The Washington Post, VOX, to mention a few. 

Emin Özmen

Emin Özmen is a Magnum Photographer who has been published in major media outlets and has won several awards among them two World Press Photo awards and the Public Prize of The Bayeux Calvados awards for war correspondents.

Richard Koci Hernandez

Emmy-award-winner Richard Koci Hernandez has been practicing street photography for decades.His black and white work has a distinctly film-noir flavor, evoking modernist photography of the ’30s which balances formal compositions with gritty textures and human narratives.

Dilek F. Yurdakul

Specializing in street and documentary photography, Yurdakul’s work has garnered over 200 awards and international recognition. As a contributor to National Geographic YS and National Geographic Turkey, she shares her captivating stories and unique artistic vision with a global audience.

Presenting the eleventh issue of Eyeshot Magazine, a masterfully curated and eco-sustainable publication, produced in a limited edition. This is not just a magazine; it’s a work of art, printed on premium Fedrigoni paper, entirely made in Italy. Our journey to this moment has been nothing short of extraordinary. With a relentless commitment, our small yet incredibly devoted team of 4 has invested over 3,000 hours of work, 7 days a week, to bring the Eyeshot Open Call 2023 to a triumphant conclusion. Through the lenses of talented photographers from around the globe, we’ve captured the very essence of street and documentary photography. This year’s theme, “The Human Being,” has allowed us to explore the myriad facets of human experience. From the hustle and bustle of urban life to the tranquility of rural landscapes, from candid snapshots to profound human conditions, the submissions have showcased life in its most authentic forms. With an overwhelming 15,000 photographs submitted from over 100 different countries, the level of passion and creativity has been awe-inspiring.
