Mahdi Barchian
This series explores the profound impact of climate change and environmental destruction on human life in Iran, one of the countries most affected by ecological degradation. Through the photographer’s lens, the project captures the intersection of environmental crises, internal migration, and human resilience.“How Does It End?” begins in northern Iran, a region with forests and a moderate climate. As a child, the photographer noticed newcomers to their hometown, later revealed to be climate migrants displaced by severe storms and worsening droughts in central and eastern Iran.

Over the past decade, the photographer has documented stories ranging from survivors in desolate villages near the dried Hamoon Lake to the forced migration of communities affected by dam construction and drought.

While highlighting the devastating effects of climate change, the series also sheds light on resilience. It portrays individuals and communities finding innovative ways to adapt and rebuild, offering a glimpse of hope amidst the crisis.
