Matthew Hayes’ series, “The Western Edge”, explores the complex allure of the American West, a land of both dreams and despair. Through his lens, Hayes captures the delicate balance between wilderness and civilization, showcasing vast landscapes punctuated by communities that ebb and flow.
Hayes’ journey takes viewers across high-desert plains and into forested mountains, where the air is thick with the scents of pine and spruce. On the horizon, smokestacks signal hidden cities offering commerce, camaraderie, and temptation. Weathered buildings, adorned with faded advertisements, sit alongside modern constructions that lack the soul of the past. These contrasts highlight the West’s unique ability to be both disheartening and deeply inspiring.

Eyeshot Magazine #16
The third Eyeshot Open Call, a reading of contemporary street and documentary photography across continents and approaches. Issue #16 collects six awarded works, single images and series, selected by a jury of seven photographers, editors, and curators. The works move between street observation, documentary practice, intimate portraiture, and political witness, presented as an annual reading of what photography is doing now.
