Penko Skumov

SIX DAYS ON AN ISLAND

Photographer Penko Skumov spent six cold and humid days in London in May 2019: ‘I was walking on the streets of this great city as a stranger, as an observer. Small details, gestures and strange moments reveal to me the hidden face of this world city beneath its shiny mask. Loneliness, boredom, melancholy and uncertainty – sometimes you can see them when you adjust your vision’.
The streets of this self-sufficient city, self-sufficient island look surreal. On the streets and squares of London, in any public places, you can find the magic and the mystery of human beings.
And if you have enough patience and a compassionate eye, the Providence will reveal something deep and unseen about their souls.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Penko Skumov was born in Burgas, Bulgaria in 1978, I grеw up in Pomorie on the Black Sea coast. I studied art history and cultural studies in New Bulgarian University in Sofia. I’ve worked as a graphic designer and a photographer in Sofia over the past 15 years.
My interest in street photography began 5 years ago. The genre helped me to rediscover the passion of taking photos. I believe that “the street” is the last challenge and the last modern genre in photography today. It is always new, always developing and always inspiring because bare life itself is its object.
Member of BULB Collective (Balkan Urban League without Borders) since November 2018.
