Format & Approach
Five days built around three rhythms. Mornings dedicated to group critiques of the previous day’s images and discussions of Kalvar’s contact sheets and working methods. Afternoons spent shooting on the streets of Bologna, occasionally alongside Kalvar himself. The first day opened with portfolio reviews; the final day closed with editing and sequencing each participant’s work into a personal series.

Outcomes
A cohesive personal series, edited and sequenced together with Kalvar. Direct observation of how Kalvar moves and works in the field. A closer reading of how timing, framing, and humour build photographs that reveal the strangeness hidden in ordinary moments.

Richard Kalvar (b. 1944, USA) studied literature at Cornell before moving to photography. After a formative trip to Europe in 1966, he settled in Paris, joined Vu, and co-founded Viva in 1972. In 1975 he became an associate member of Magnum Photos, a full member in 1977, and later served as vice-president and president of the agency. His work has been exhibited internationally, including a retrospective at the Maison Europรฉenne de la Photographie in 2007 with the accompanying book Earthlings. Kalvar’s photographs find the strangeness hidden in ordinary moments through timing, framing, and tension balanced by humour.

Day 1 (Monday, March 9th)
10 AM – 3 PM: Introduction by Kalvar, presentation of his work and approach, individual portfolio reviews.
3 PM onwards: Shooting session on the streets of Bologna.

Day 2-4 (Tuesday-Thursday, March 10-12th)
10 AM – 1 PM: Group critique of the previous day’s images, further insights into Kalvar’s methods and contact sheets.
3 PM onwards: Street shooting practice.

Day 5 (Friday, March 13th)
All day: Final review of participants’ work, editing and sequencing into a personal series, closing reflections with Kalvar.

Bologna, Italy. The workshop headquarters at Eyeshot Studio (Via Emilia Levante 105/5 A) hosted the theoretical sessions. Practice took place across Bologna’s historic centre, walking through the UNESCO World Heritage porticoes and into the surrounding neighbourhoods. The city’s compressed scale and constant flow of pedestrians made it possible to shoot continuously across short distances.
