“LIQUID CITIES” BY GUSTAVO MINAS

Fluid Cities: Through the Lens of Modern Life

In a collection of +110 photographs, spanning 160 pages meticulously designed and made in Italy, “Liquid Cities” delves into the concept of ‘Liquid Modernity’ as theorized by Zygmunt Bauman, portraying the fluidity and constant change inherent in today’s urban environments.

“Liquid Cities” stands as a captivating visual journey through the heart of contemporary urbanity, where Gustavo Minas masterfully encapsulates the essence of our transient, fragmented world through street photography offering a unique perspective on the complexity and beauty of modern life.

Navigating Liquid Modernity

Gustavo Minas’ “Liquid Cities” brings to life the concept of ‘Liquid Modernity,’ exploring the fluid and ever-evolving nature of today’s urban landscapes. Through his evocative photography, Minas portrays the impermanent aspects of city life, where human connections are ephemeral and the physical spaces we inhabit are continuously reshaped by the forces of globalization and technological progress.

In “Liquid Cities,” Gustavo Minas shares his artistic evolution from capturing the serene stillness of his hometown to immersing himself in the vibrant chaos of Brasília and other urban centers. His journey is one of introspection and discovery, navigating through themes of alienation and disconnection in modern society. In a delicate balance of light and shadow, movement and stillness, Gustavo Minas captures the essence of urban life in its myriad forms by encouraging us to see beyond the chaos of city life, to the moments of connection and reflection that lie beneath the surface – all in a profound commentary on the human experience in the modern world.

Through his street photography, Gustavo Minas artfully explores the fluidity and diversity of urban landscapes, portraying them as transient spaces that underscore the solitude and fragmentation of contemporary life. This collection is a profound visual commentary on the ever-changing, dynamic experiences that shape our existence in modern cities.

The Photographer

Gustavo Minas

Born in Cassia, a town n Minas Gerais, Brazil, Gustavo Minas embarked on a journey that led him from journalism graduate to a celebrated street photographer. His initial post-graduation year in London, working as a waiter, and subsequent period as a reporter in São Paulo, laid the groundwork for a career pivot that would redefine his life’s trajectory. Disenchanted by the monotony of journalism, Gustavo sought solace and expression in photography.

Gustavo’s philosophy revolves around the joy of capturing moments for himself amidst the urban rush, a practice he has diligently pursued daily, whether at home or on the streets. His work, primarily focusing on the human condition within urban spaces, showcases a profound fascination with light, reflections, and the lives of others.

“The subjects tell me the meaning and value of life. To take a picture is to affirm the existence of peopleーthe human nature and karmaーand it’s also an opportunity to affirm my own existence and accept it as it is.”
