“Mareterno” is the first book by the Italian Street Photography duo Lorenzo Catena and Valeria Tofanelli, with an introduction by Melissa Breyer. The 136 picturesque photographs unfold the secrets at the margins of Rome, far away from the Eternal City as we know it. “Mareterno” (Eternal Sea) is a complex body of work that takes the viewer on a journey whose aim is to give people and places their voice. Often led by chance, Lorenzo Catena and Valeria Tofanelli listened to the stories of the city dwellers: each and every one of them added a piece to the complex relationship with Ostia — the place where the book takes place. The outcome is a compelling experience that allows the viewer to discover truths yet to be revealed.

“Mareterno” comes in two different limited-editions: White Edition and Black Edition. The Black Edition features one unique Fine Art Photograph (30×20 cm) that has never been printed for sales before, and exclusively available through the purchasing of the book only.

Valeria Tofanelli is a Roman photographer whose work explores the relationship between man and environment through the narration of everyday life. Fascinated by the potential of photographic language, her approach to image blends reality with fiction to create evocative and personal stories. Her photography work has been exhibited in both Italy and overseas, published in books, magazines, as well as online articles. Since 2022 she is a member of the international collective Burn My Eye.

Lorenzo Catena is a photographer and architect based in Rome, Italy. He captures moments of everyday life, working towards complex and evocative compositions assembled with harmony through vibrant colours and plays of light. In 2019, Lorenzo was among the winners at the “Summer heat” competition curated by Magnum Photos. In 2021, his work was selected by Martin Parr in The Independent Photographer Platform, Street Photography category.
