New York City: Where Everything Happens All at Once

Between the 60s and the 80s, New York was a beacon of aspirational chaos. A crucible of culture, fusing an eccentric palette of grit and glamour, decay and renaissance.

A nocturnal, narcotic city, where street lamps flickered not for the faulty wiring, but for the frenetic energy pulsating beneath them. A dystopian dreamscape, it was scattered with artists and addicts, hustlers and hedonists, philosophers and fools, all in pursuit of an unspoken, indefinable New York dream.

New York was a city in the grip of unrestrained freedom and relentless deterioration: a paradox of extremes.

“Standalone”: A Complete and Complex Cluster of Human Life

The term “standalone” is understood as something able to operate independently, that it is complete in itself – just like New York City.

It is built on the complexity and uniqueness of the city, as well as the stories of human life that inhabit it and that make New York City the place where everything happens all at once. A place encompassing human life in a cluster of different forms and variable – all present at the same time.

It was a city of tarnished taxis and tarnished souls, with a skyline was as ragged as the experiences that forged its inhabitants. It was the unbreakable spirit of the city, the unflinching resolve of its people, and the endless drive of its dreamers that gave meaning to the madness.

The New York of the time, it was not pretty. It was not safe.
But it was real and alive.

The Monograph

As a tribute to American photographer Jill Freedman, one of the most important and and influential American documentary photographers of all time, “STANDALONE” is an immersive look into the complexities of human experience.
It’s a photographic journey into the madness of New York City, its city’s streets, subways, and neighborhoods during a time of great change and social unrest.

The Photographer’s Vision

“New York is NOT America. There are more gentle souls, more deranged psyches, more lunatic energies goosing and goading you on here than in the rest of the country combined. If it isn’t happening here, it isn’t happening. Like I said, New York is my town.”
