EYESHOT EXPERIENCE: A Journey into Urban transformation

The Historical Context: Bagnoli and Coroglio

Situated in the city of Naples abutting Capo Posillipo, Coroglio is an area that brushes against the beautiful Capo Posillipo. Nestled within this area is Bagnoli, once the pulsating heart of Italian industrialization and a location as complex as it is intriguing. It served as the seat of Italsider, one of the largest steelworks in Europe and a beacon of Italy’s post-war economic miracle. However, the closure of the steelworks in the 1990s ushered in a period of decline, leaving behind a landscape scarred by industrial decay and a community grappling with unemployment and uncertainty.

Today, Bagnoli is a realm of contrasts, a haunting yet alluring tableau where echoes of a prosperous past mingle with visions of an undefined future. Its piers, warehouses, and machinery have become a sort of industrial archaeology, a visual representation of the cycles of growth, decline, and transformation that many urban areas undergo. These areas have wrestled with identity, caught between a past of industrial prowess and a future still in the making. They represent the epitome of urban transformation, offering endless visual narratives waiting to be explored and captured.

The Human Element: Beyond Documentation

Capturing Change, Complexity, and Humanity

The aim of this photo-experience is to crystallize this complex tapestry into a series of five images. Your photos should not merely document but interpret, turning ruins into symbols, faces into stories, and landscapes into emotions.

To enrich your experience, you’ll conduct brief interviews with the locals, adding layers of empathy and information to your visual story. The ultimate goal is to produce a narrative that marries the remnants of industrial Bagnoli with the human elements that are its past, present, and future.
