Sunny Quintero

This ongoing photographic series by Sunny Quintero began unintentionally, sparked by a growing admiration for the strength and dedication of military women navigating a predominantly male world. Through her lens, the photographer explores their dualities: delicacy and sensitivity intertwined with immense physical and mental resilience. Many of these women face harassment and abuses of power, while balancing the challenges of leaving their families, especially as mothers, to pursue leadership roles in the armed forces. Currently, women make up only 11% of the Mexican military, a statistic that prompted the photographer to question their underrepresentation and honor their contributions by making their stories visible.

The series captures intimate moments from the lives of female soldiers, highlighting both their personal and professional worlds. Some images document the troops preparing for the September 16 military parade commemorating Mexico’s independence, making their beds, applying makeup, or boarding trucks. Others were taken in the streets of the historic center, where they prepare to march alongside their male counterparts.

These photographs aim to shed light on the sacrifices, struggles, and determination of these women, who not only fight for their country but also work to break barriers and pave the way for future generations in the Mexican armed forces.
