A suburban street corner with an Inglewood Avenue sign flanked by trees, in a black-and-white photograph by Blake Andrews.

Blake Andrews reflects on a photographic practice built on curiosity rather than control. Often described as a street photographer, Andrews is quick to question the term. Living far from major cities, he photographs what he encounters while walking, observing, and moving through rural spaces, small towns, alleys, parades, without chasing decisive moments or predefined narratives.

Working predominantly in black and white and on film, Andrews embraces abstraction, visual ambiguity, and imperfection as essential tools. Processing marks, reflections, split frames, and accidental distortions are not flaws to be corrected, but opportunities to destabilize. For him, a successful photograph is one that resists explanation and feels complete without intervention.
