A herd of horses stands in a muddy wooded enclosure, a white horse at the center, in a color photograph by Emil Gataullin.

Russian photographer Emil Gataullin opens a rare window onto a practice shaped less by urgency than by duration. Coming from an artistic background in painting, he describes photography as a translation, a slow negotiation between emotion and observation, where the photographer must remain receptive without imposing too much.

Gataullin also reflects on his shift from black and white to color, not as a stylistic upgrade but as a new kind of responsibility and another layer of truth to misread the world. He shares how he approaches editing and post-production with restraint, protecting the image’s ambiguity rather than “solving” it. The discussion closes on his latest sold-out book with Eyeshot, rooted in the Mezen region, and on the enduring hope that images can still move something, somewhere.

Mezen: By Sky's Edge

Emil Gataullin

Edited by Marco Savarese

"Mezen: By Sky’s Edge" is a visual elegy to the disappearing rural life along the Mezen River in northern Russia, a place where time seems suspended between a distant past and an unreachable future.
