A person with large white feathered wings steps out of a yellow taxi on a New York street, in a color photograph by Melissa O'Shaughnessy.

Melissa O’Shaughnessy traces a late but decisive entry into photography. From building a darkroom for her son to discovering the street through Joel Meyerowitz’s infectious belief in color, she describes how practice reshaped her temperament.

O’Shaughnessy reflects on the shift from film to digital as an evolution of pace and possibility, not a rejection of craft. New York remains her laboratory, where crowds offer safety, collisions generate form, and culture becomes subject. She also addresses the blurred borders between street and documentary and the ethics of respect.
