Shaolin monks in yellow robes practice martial arts by a red temple wall, one leaping mid-air, in a color photograph by Laurin Strele.

Austrian-born photojournalist and travel documentary photographer Laurin Strele reflects on the craft as both witnessing and storytelling.

Laurin describes his method of arriving in a place slowly: walking, listening, learning rhythm, and earning access through respect rather than speed. He also reflects on his relationship with Leica and its status symbol. The conversation moves into the realities of danger, including a tense assignment in Ukraine, and the difficult return to “ordinary life” after experiences that recalibrate your perspective.

In this episode, Laurin Strele speaks about truth, trust, and why documentary work begins long before the shutter.
