Some photographers spend a lifetime chasing the joke on the street. Mark J Davidson goes the other way. Off camera he is a happy man who hosts breakfast radio in Melbourne; on the street he is after mood, tension, and a somber unease he admits is a little depressing. He came to photography late, after a life as an athlete and a drummer, and found his voice when his city changed. After one of the harshest lockdowns in the world, Melbourne reopened into protest and division, and he turned to film and black and white to hold that fracture. In this conversation he talks about honesty in a saturated genre, the ethics of candid work in an age of doorbells and cameras, and why you should worry about substance, not performance.
